New Year's Revelers Told to Dress Warmly with Wintry Weather Predicted Across the UK
Meteorologists are reporting an icy beginning to the new year, with snow likely across much of the UK. Celebrants are advised to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Celebrations Proceed Amid Warnings
Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay celebrations are expected to take place, a contrast to last year's postponement. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve night for those partying, so warmer clothes will be needed," noted the Met Office.
Celebrations Under Open but Chilly Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with no rain and open skies. Readings are forecast to be low, so extra layers a necessity, said forecasters.
To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Extensive Advisories for Friday
As we enter Friday, snow alerts have been issued across Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- Travelers are advised to leave additional time for trips on the road.
- Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on trains and buses.
Temperatures Expected to Plummet Further
As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are expected to batter the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Medical Advisories Released
In addition, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities said this signified the weather was likely to cause major effects across medical and care provision. This includes a likely increase in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.
