Southern California Faces Historic Heat Just Days After Severe Winter Weather.
After enduring significant rainfall that resulted in floodwaters across parts of the city, the City of Angels is now grappling with unusually warm weather for the end of February.
All-Time High Temperatures
During the day Friday, the temperature reached 91°F (33°C) in downtown Los Angeles, as reported by weather officials. This exceeds the prior high for this date, which was eighty-eight degrees Fahrenheit and was established in 2025.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were labeled on NWS maps for the region.
Safety Advisories
Authorities cautioned that Friday's weather posed an "elevated risk for heat illness" for those at risk. Their guidance included:
- Staying hydrated.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave anyone unattended in a hot car.
A Sharp Reversal
This sudden spike in mercury comes on the heels of a powerful winter storm that battered the region earlier in the week. That event brought thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to the mountains, leading to flash flood warnings for countless residents.
Unfortunately, the storm also triggered a massive avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Weekend Outlook
The outlook suggests some relief will arrive. Readings were forecast to decrease to around 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in downtown LA by overnight.
Several cities that hit the 90-degree mark featured Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Meanwhile, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were expected to experience the upper eighties.
In the coming days, central LA can anticipate temperatures in the eighties, with mid-70s temperatures likely for the start of March.
