The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Track
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple agonizing backstories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition composed by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second one released by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its tone is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have a few changes and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
