The teenager has featured in seven matches for Real Madrid, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a 18-year-old creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a key Champions League tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.

During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 last-16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English champions in the midweek return to secure a last eight berth.

Aged 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise From The Academy

The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and drive he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to train with the first team and awarded him minutes in pre-season.

However, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his career as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I began playing the game, each day you go to train and every day you play a match," stated Pitarch following his debut.

"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."

Handed a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he was for four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have defied his youth and experience.

"He is a extremely fast player, and you can see his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He's extremely energetic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.

"His standout trait is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand people are surprised to see him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the first team. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, moving through local academies before entering Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the choice to represent either country at the highest level.

According to international regulations, players may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a competitive full international.

Pitarch has played for Spain at underage levels, representing both the U19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are watching his rise with interest.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. My situation is great with Spain, but I will reach a decision in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Diaz decided to play for Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.

He featured for over an hour in the two-one victory at City, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.

His substitution by another academy player in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the club pursue trophies to come.

After his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the pitch," he commented after the win at Etihad Stadium.
