US Officials Announce Apprehension in Thwarted Year-End Explosive Plot Near Southern California
US authorities declared on Monday that they had managed to foil a elaborate plot to detonate explosive devices at numerous facilities belonging to two US-based firms on New Year's Eve in the LA region. The move resulted from the detainment of individuals part of an radical group promoting anti-system and anti-establishment beliefs.
Suspects Apprehended During Remote Practice
Four suspects were taken into custody last Friday in the Mojave Desert found east of Los Angeles as they were allegedly running through their proposed operation. Federal attorneys showed aerial monitoring images to reporters, which depicted the group transporting a sizeable dark device to a table. Authorities noted that the apprehensions occurred before the suspects could assemble a operational explosive device.
Identities of the Suspects Made Public
Based on the public legal filing, the four people identified are a 30-year-old named Audrey Illeene Carroll; Zachary Aaron Page, 32; 24-year-old Dante Gaffield; and Lai, 41. The group are said to be from the greater Los Angeles area.
Alleged Motivation and Group Affiliations
Although prosecutors did not explicitly outline a rationale, they stated the individuals are part of a faction dubbed the Turtle Island Liberation Front. The group according to documents advocates for "laborers to rebel and fight back against corporate power," based on the court papers.
They face include conspiracy to commit a crime and having a explosive. The government stated that further counts are anticipated in the next few weeks.
Elements of the Alleged "The Midnight Sun Plan"
Officials stated that one of the accused had drafted a detailed scheme last month to target five or more corporate facilities across Southern California on New Year's Eve. The locations were described as "Amazon-type" fulfillment warehouses.
"This scheme was detailed," a prosecutor said. "It contained step-by-step instructions to construct explosive devices … and named several objectives across Orange County and Los Angeles."
As per the probe and the complaint, the plan involved positioning rucksacks packed with complex IEDs that were scheduled to be exploded simultaneously at midnight on New Year's Eve at several locations. New Year's Eve was chosen as an ideal time because the plan noted "pyrotechnics will be going off at this time so blast noises will be more difficult to be detected."
An eight-page longhand blueprint, called "OPERATION MIDNIGHT SUN," stated that additional sites could be added. The facilities were categorized as property and buildings operated by two different corporations connected with business involving commerce.
Future Schemes and Materials Found
Court documents also stated that two members in the group had talked about subsequent operations targeting ICE agents officers and vehicles with pipe bombs in 2026. One accused reportedly said that such actions "would take some of them out and frighten the rest of them."
The plotting were allegedly discussed both at an in-person assembly in Los Angeles and through an secure digital platform.
Images included in the court documents show a remote camp with what officials said were IED-construction materials scattered on makeshift work surfaces.
The filing states that the suspects "each brought IED parts to the site, such as assorted sizes of plastic pipes, identified as a chemical compound, charcoal briquettes, fuel powder, powdered sulfur, and components to be used as igniters, among others."
The scheme also included directions on how to construct the bombs and how to not leave behind forensic clues that could be linked back to the group. The individuals had recently acquired precursor chemicals and other materials, via acquisitions from online retailers.
Arrest and Aftermath
Federal agents moved in last week while the group were running through the attack in the desert near a desert community. "They possessed every item they needed to construct an working IED at that site," the attorney commented.
As part of executed search warrants, authorities allegedly found flyers for the Turtle Island Liberation Front at one individual's home that called for "Death to America", and "Death to ICE". At another accused's home, police located a version of the elaborate explosives scheme.
The suspects were arrested without incident. They were due to appear in court in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon.
